The film is touted to be a scare fest and notches ahead of Ramu’s own BHOOT. Says an insider, ”Get ready to be on the edge of your seat and risks falling off it as well as you watch PHOONK. The film’s black magic theme is unique and Ramu’s vintage touch of BHOOT is very much visible once again. He loves playing around with the horror genre and in PHOONK he has gone ahead an extra mile.”

“It has been more than 15 years since I started taking myself too seriously”, laughs Ramu, “I realized that the moment you start taking yourself too seriously, you are screwed forever. It is best to leave your disappointments behind and move on in life.” This sounds good. However, isn’t it too soon and too fast for Ram Gopal Varma?

“He confesses that he was heavily inspired by Yendamuri’s Tulasidalam which he read during his college days. ‘Phoonk is loosely based on the novel but the treatment is different. The narration revolves around one girl. What I tried to show is the fight between belief and non-belief, science and faith. I am not endorsing that one should believe it or not. It is just a film.

So much so that now Ramu and Azam Khan, his producer, have, rather immodestly, announced a prize money of Rs 5 lakh for anyone who can dare to see the film all alone in the theatre. Darna strictly mana hai. Azam Khan says, “We’re confident that the film is so scary that it will be extremely difficult to watch it all alone in a theatre. We will be running a contest and giving out details on our website about how to participate in it.

The story of ‘Phoonk’ revolves around black magic. The film has the potentiality to really scare the audience. It is a different type of film, but will appeal to a large section of film buffs,’ Sudeep told IANS. ‘I think ‘Phoonk’ will make you think about many sequences of the film for many days after you have seen it,’ he added. Sudeep, who made his film debut with ‘Thayava’, said he chose the film mainly because it provided an opportunity to work with Varma.

“Phoonk” is the story of a confirmed atheist whose belief systems are shaken up when his loved ones are subjected to unspeakable horrors by forces whose very existence his rational mind refuses to accept. It is also the story of a fanatical devotee who is forced to turn her back on God in the face of traumatic experiences. “Phoonk” is also a very scary film, but the fear element is not just on the surface level like for instance in a film like “Bhoot”.
