Jaane Tu Ya jaaaane naaaaaaaa!

July 5th, 2008 · 9 Comments

A well made movie always works, no matter how many times the basic plot may be repeated. Jaane Tu… Ya Jaane Na is one movie which just fits the bill. The college romance has been used as a backdrop in numerous Bollywood movies like Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikander, Kuch Kuch Hota hai, Main Hoon Na and so many others.

So let’s meet the Gang …

Lets start with the inseparable Rats and Meow -

Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na

Jai Singh Rathod (Imran Khan) the non-violent Rajput, is the coolest guy around. He can get himself out of any fight without even raising his voice.
Aditi Mahant(Genelia D’souza) has the most volatile temper and can blast anyone with the choicest ‘gaalis’.

Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na

Jiggi aka The Jignesss Patel - is a rich Gujju boy. He always has his fire chariot for the gang to ride around in even though he is a miser and considers it very lucky for someone to get a US visa.
Shaleen is the chilled out collegite who is Aditi’s best friend after Rats. She is the mature lady of the group who senses the subtleties of the relations between everyone and understands them.
Rotlu is the pessimist and forever whining.
Bombs is cute with the playboy bunny around her neck and sports the bunny T-Shirts.

What follows is a simple story which tries to answer the tagline - “So when do you know it’s love?”. What really captures your heart are the simple moments, the well written characters & their relationships and ofcourse the awesome dialogues and screenplay which makes the movie really enjoyable.

Even though it is one of the most common love stories, it has been made beautifully. The jokes though cliched definitely leave you in splits. No actor or character is wasted. Every actor plays his roles to the T. This light love story leaves you with a very romantic mood at the end of the 2 hours and 40 minutes. Even makes you wish you had your Aditi/Jai.

Jaane Tu Ya Jaane Na

But a special acknowledgment has to be made to all the special roles of the movie.

  • Ratna Pathak has beautifully portrayed the role of Jai’s mother - Savitri. Their relationship is something that everyone would love to share with their own mother.
  • Nasseruddin Shah just continues with his brilliant self playing the dead Rajput father. His role is small and is limited to the photo frame in Jai’s living room but one role that won’t go unnoticed.
  • Next comes Aditi’s parents played by Jayant Kriplani and Anuradha Patel. They do a fair job of being the friendly parents.
  • Paresh Rawal is superb as Inspector Waghmare the notorious inspector who has an enduring battle with Savitri over basic human rights. You end up thanking him for making his share of jokes entertaining.
  • The Khan brothers -Sohail and Arbaaz are outstanding playing Horse riding Rajputs. Every time you think they are done with the ‘hatke’ scenes they come back.
  • A very special eccentric role played by Prateik Babbar, son of Raj Babbar and the legendary Smita Patil. He plays brother to Aditi. He makes very captivating effect with his tiny role and impressive acting.
  • Last but not the least the white horse!!! :-)
I don’t know if it’s because Aamir is environment friendly or it’s the hike in fuel prices but you get to see more horses than cars in this film.

My verdict: Yeh movie toh chalegi hi chalegi boss. Imran Khan is definitely the gen-next of the Khan brigade and won’t be easily forgotten. He surely got his appreciation from the girls - the ohs and ahs and the whistles in the theater were proof enough. Genelia has made her presence felt in Bollywood. Yeh picture toh hit hai!
