There was a time when Marathi cinema was spending time in doldrums. Other states in India had forgotten the viability of films from Maharashtra. There have been legendary aspects to it in the past, but there was this phase of depression which almost wiped it’s existence.
Suddenly the Marathi industry seems to have taken a giant leap. Production houses have sprung up, amazing talent has come forth, we get to see all what was needed, a vital spark to get Marathi cinema back on track.

At the Pune International Film Festival, one of the most enjoyed films was Valu (the wild bull). Ensuring a giggle every moment, Valu has lived up to the expectations of a true Marathi-frenzy audience. Ex-FTII Umesh Kulkarni has directed the movie in a really proficient manner. He has made sure that the audience is absorbed into his rural theme, equally afraid of the wild bull ‘Valu’ as the other villagers are.

Every character has been given a scrupulous personality. Be it Atul Kulkarni, our hero forest officer running around the village with a dart pipe, to the typical sarpanch played wonderfully by Dr. Mohan Agashe, with his even typical wife played by Bharati Acharekar. Dilip Prabhavalkar is the most enjoyable as always, playing a pundit suffering an intermittent stomach disorder. His wife (Nirmitee Sawant) also stressing the fact that the scarcity of toilets is the biggest problem in villages. Exceptional performances by Girish Kulkarni, Veena Jamkar, Mangesh Satpute, Amruta Subhash and all others have made the movie very promising.

Valu released all over today. Hope it makes everyone’s Republic Day very entertaining. Cheers to the team of Valu!

The movie is really very well directed and all the characters in this movie has performed very nicely. While watching the movie, never felt its a movie. Felt like watching a real life of ‘Gramin’ people. Jokes are shown with ease.
