I have just returned from watching Om Shanti Om… and I am already wondering how soon I can watch it again. (It can be a little difficult when there are so many new movies to watch!)
Anyway, if you want a short opinion on the film here it is: You’re gonna love the film, if you’re even half as filmi as I am. It’s big on melodrama and pays big tributes to (in other words: spoofs) a lot of stars, styles and movies from the 70s, and even some from the South. And it does that with aplomb… providing some laughs, and a whole lot of entertainment. Assuming you are not looking for true-to-life tearjerkers, this movie is definitely going to entertain you, in true Bollywood style.

The movie starts with a junior artiste Om Prakash Makhija (SRK) and his big dreams to make it as an actor. Buddy (Shreyas Talpade) encourages and aides Om at every step. Besides dreaming about superstardom, Om also dreams about one day getting to know Shantipriya, who is the star of the film “Dreamy Girl” (played by Deepika Padukone). Om manages to befriend her, only to discover her secret - she’s already married to a conniving producer Mukesh Mehra (Arjun Rampal). The archetypal villain - Mukesh Mehra, cannot see beyond the millions he is going to make on his new production. Shantipriya puts an abrupt end to his film by announcing she is pregnant. Mukesh’s response to that is to burn down the set, and along with it the Shantipriya and collecting an insurance payout on the losses. Om, in a bid to save his beloved Shantipriya’s life, loses his own in the fire. All is lost, Om is dead and so is Shanti. But is it? No! It’s the land of Bollywood… and dreams are never left unfinished. Om comes back - thirty years later… reincarnated and ready-for-revenge. And this time, he is not just a junior artist, but is the son of a yesteryear superstar. I am sure you don’t want me to reveal how the plot unfolds one day before the worldwide premier of the movie! So get your tickets now and find out for yourself. It’s definitely worth your money!
The movie is full of fancy gimmicks: the opening sequence with SRK playing a junior artist in Subhash Ghai’s Karz, use of Sooraj Barjatya, Govinda lookalikes to “reinvent” some history and of course a song starring the who’s who of Bollywood. It all makes for a very entertaining, and colourful 3 hours. SRK displays (yet again) his ability to laugh at himself by showing clips of movies like “Main Bhi Hoon Na” and “Phir Bhi Dil Hai NRI”. Speaking of SRK, as usual, his performance exudes energy… he dances like his life depends on it… and quite frankly - Dard-e-Disco looks awesome - in terms of sets, colours (”art design” if you must!) and in terms of SRK’s newly-found 6-packs! He dominates the movie, and is part of every single scene. Deepika on the other hand has a much shorter role but shines! She comes across as a confident and good actress. She has a great personality, besides a stunning body and probably the sweetest smile after Sharmila Tagore… those dimples are to die for! Shreyas Talpade has a very small role - and I don’t really knw why he did it - besides the glamour of the Farah Khan-SRK camp of course. That leaves Arjun Rampal - he looks awesome as Mukesh… very stylish. He plays a very suave villain.
Well, that’s about it from me folks. Wish all my readers and bookeazy members and admin a very Happy Diwali. Hope your Diwali is peaceful and filled with great movies

** SPOILER WARNING **
Om Shanti Om or OSO is a good movie made by Farah Khan. The movie is about Om Prakash Makhija(SRK) who is a junior artist of 70s who dreams of getting married to his favourite actress Shanti Priya(Deepika Padukone)unknowing a fact that Shanti is already married to a film producer Mukesh Mehra(Arjun Rampal). When he comes to know this and comes to know that Mukesh is again getting married to Mittal’s daughter to get lots of money as dowry hiding the secret of his and Shanti’s marriage in front of the whole world but due to Shanti revealing the secret to the public of their marriage he decides to burn up the set of Om Shanti Om along with Shanti who is the main cause due to which his film OSO ended before it even began to be shooted.Om tries to save Shanti but in that attempt he dies but after the interval everything changes SRK is again born as a superstar Om Kapoor or OK who is the son of Rajesh Kapoor(Javed Sheikh) but after meeting Bela(Kirron Kher) he realises that he is reincarnated as Om Kapoor or OK to punish Mukesh for Shanti’s death so one day OK meets Sandy, whose face is similar to Shanti and tells her the plan of trying to kill Mukesh so OK tries to make the movie OSO once again of which Mukesh stopped the shooting and burned the set along with Shanti 30 yrs ago.He is also given support by Om Makhija’s friend Pappu Master(Shreyas Talpade) but at the end Shanti’s ghost arrives revealing the secret that when the fire had stopped burning Mukesh entered the set and buried Shanti alive so that nobody suspects that Shanti died in the fire and then Mukesh dies. The movie is good.SRK-excellent.Deepika-superb and beautiful.Shreyas-good.Kirron-good.Arjun-great.The music is good especially Dard-E-Disco.I give it *****stars.

I can’t believe no1 mentioned deepika padukone’s voiceover?? maybe it didn’t get in your way too much. I ain’t a stickler for such details but the voice(done by some1 else) was so familiar and common that it did bother me a little in the beginning. Ofcourse farah khan has denied that completely.
They lie through their teeth to save their skin! But I guess she has to do it to avoid speculations about the newcomer’s acting skills.
I just saw the movie and it was clearly dubbed by some1 else unless deepika padukone has dubbed for many many many other actresses previously. I am sure of it because the voice didn’t just sound familiar, I knew who else she had dubbed for previously too. Bipasha Basu for one..
This shows how much importance an actress has in a bolly film, they don’t even care if she can emote perfectly. pathetic state..
Om shanti om is all about srk obviously and his amazing star power.
The awkward familiar voiceover didn’t keep me from enjoying the movie though, especially arjun rampal. The 2 standout scenes for me were the fire scene and the story-musical at the end-very well done that one with brilliant colors and imagery throughout.
Only thing is this familiar voice creeps up in so many movies, its irritating. The real voiceover artist should get some credit!

Hi Ravi… I did not notice the voiceover. I quite thought it was her original voice… but since I haven’t heard Deepika speak before, I cannot be sure.
A lot of female stars have been dubbed for before they became famous - Rani Mukerjee in Ghulam for instance. And if that’s the case, the filmmakers should own up to it. You’re right - the voice-over artist must be given credit.

It’s one of the horrible movie , I have ever seen and expected from SRK.
1st half is bit better, however the moment the 2nd half starts, you will find cheap and over acting from SRK and no acting from Deepika…
I guess you should not spend money to see movie like dis in Multiplexes…rather buy an CD from a roadside hawker worth 20/- and watch it at home…u won’t feel the pinch of loosing money….
Rest it depends on your taste and understanding of movies….

Loved the first half. It was nice seeing the Govinda, Sooraj Barjatya and Manoj Kumar scene. Second half could have been a little more fast….the movie sort of slowed down after the song Dard-E-Disco. But nevertheless it was well worth 50 bucks.

The indian producers and directors these days r short of ideas for their movies and farah khan is no exception. It is a vivid remake of subhash ghai’s classic karz but the old film had control and a firm base for a typical rebirth film. This film has no proper base and how all of a sudden srk is reborn and how does sandy resemble the actress is still a dilemma or was she her daughter.these questions are unanswered. the scene where srk as OK meets kiron kher is very poorly taken 4m Karz where rishi meets durga khote and she sees him as raj kiran which is very well shot. but this film is merely copycat . the end song 2 is a vague copy of ik hasina thi ik deewana tha. so Ms farah khan please grow up and mr srk u 2.

What a piece of crap is this movie…. how can someone watch it again. One of my all time worst movies .. and SRK had the balls to call it an all time hit … hahahahah - what an idiot ?

Hey Ravi,
Yes, I am almost certain that Deepika was dubbed in Om Shanti Om. I had my doubts at first but when Deepika came on Nach Baliye 3 to promote OSO I was sure that she had been dubbed.
The voice is familiar; it was used in the Dino-Bipasha starrer Raaz and also in Akshay and Katrina’s Humko Deewana Kar Gaye.
I noticed that Deepika’s english in OSO is far better than her spoken english in Nach Baliye 3 and also when she spoke in Hindi she sounded totally different.
However, I do not believe that it has anything to do with her acting skills; considering her very natural facial expressions and being put into the same frame as SRK.
When SRK came on Koffee with Karan he applauded Deepika’s acting skills and said that he found very attractive. After all, the model turned actress is a stunner!
Nevertheless, the voice used is not hers and whose voice it actually is remains to be a mystery. Whoever it is, her voice is very nice and one does not need to wonder why it is being used to dub our actresses.

OSO is a full ‘paisa vasool’ entertainer.SRK is excellent in the role of Om Prakash Makhija but rocks in the role of Om Kapoor or OK.Deepika is looking very pretty and confident in the role of Shantipriya but is good in the role of Sandhya or Sandy.Shreyas is funny and good in the role of Pappu Master.Kirron rocks in the role of Bela Makhija.Arjun should get the best actor in a negative role award in all the awards this year for his role of Mukesh Mehra or Mike.Javed is average in the role of Rajesh Kapoor.Asawari Joshi is not so good because she doesn’t get enough dialogues to speak and enough scope in the film because before the interval she disappears from the interval and then comes at the end credits song with Javed. The music rocks and it’s a chartbuster music especially ‘Dard-E-Disco’,'Deewangee Deewangee’ and ‘Ajab Si’.Farah has done a great job after given a commercial hit-Main Hoon Naa which had everything-romance,action,drama,suspense and rocking music.
The story:-
Om Prakash Makhija and his friend Pappu Master are junior artistes in the Bollywood movies of 70s.Pappu tells Om that he has everything for becoming a star but there is just one hitch-his surname Makhija due to which he can’t become a star and Pappu even advises him to change his surname but due to his overacting mother Bela Makhija Om can’t do so.Om has a dream of becoming a superstar and marrying the girl of his dreams and the superstar of the 70s Shantipriya.Pappu tries as much as possible to get Om close to Shantipriya. One day during a fire sequence shooting Shantipriya has to be trapped in a fire in the fields and the hero Ricky Sandhu(Raman)has to jump in the fire but he refuses to jump and later goes away from the shooting.Om jumps in the fire and saves the life of Shantipriya and they become friends. To go closer to Shantipriya Pappu gives Om a fake name Omaswami Shantinathan,a ‘Madras king’ who is South films rising star and Om has to act in a movie named ‘MIND IT’.Later he reveals his real identity to Shantipriya and Shantipriya rather than getting angry tells that she should do something for Om to repay the favour which he did by saving her so he invites her to the RC studios and gives her such a day which she won’t forget till her death.Om makes her realise that she should once ask for happiness and then happiness will surely come to her from the person she loves.Om sees Shantipriya going to her makeup room after a film shooting without talking to him.She sees her with Mukesh Mehra,a film producer who always thinks about profit where it is revealed that Shantipriya is married to Mukesh Mehra since 2 years and is pregnant.Om feels betrayed in love and starts avoiding Shantipriya and one day he throws the musical globe which Shantipriya gifted Om in the pond of RC studios.Mukesh takes her to the sets of Om Shanti Om,the biggest film to be ever made in India but he tells that since Shantipriya refused to work in the film so the set will be dismantled in few days but before that Mukesh and Shantipriya will get married in front of everybody but it is all Mukesh’s plans because he is angry with Shantipriya’s demands so he burns up the set along with Shantipriya alive.Om sees Mukesh going away after leaving Shantipriya burning.Om goes towards Shantipriya but is beaten by the bodyguards of Mukesh. He enters the building and tries to save Shantipriya but due to a blast he is thrown out of the set and is hit by Rajesh Kapoor, the superstar of the 70s car who is rushing his pregnant wife Lovely to hospital.Lovely gives birth to a boy and at the same time Om dies.30 years later.Om is reborn as Om Kapoor, popularly known as OK,the superstar of 2007 movies and son of Rajesh Kapoor. He always comes late on the set and without doing any shooting leaves the shoot and at every studio his mother Bela Makhija, now turned old waits for OK thinking that OK is her son Om Prakash Makhija but is consoled by Pappu that it is OK and not Om Prakash Makhija who for them disappeared 30 years ago.For a superhero film shoot the director(Vishal of the famous music duo Vishal-Shekhar) wants an abandoned building so they select RC studios. When OK enters the burned RC studios he starts remembering some of his instances associated with RC studios 30 years ago. After the shooting ends rain starts so he has to go inside the RC studios and he enters the makeup room of Shantipriya and sees Shantipriya arguing with Mukesh Mehra and OK sees Om Prakash Makhija who resembles him listening to them by hiding in the store room.OK gets the best actor award in the FILMFARE awards and during the speech ceremony he remembers a speech given by him 30 years ago in front of Pappu and some poor kids and says it.He is now in dilemma that whether he is OK or somebody else?He meets Mukesh now Mike who for 25 years was a producer of Hollywood and wants to make a comeback in Bollywood with OK as the hero of his film.OK meets Bela and Pappu and explains his plan but Pappu after sometime agrees to his plan.OK tells Mukesh in a restaurant of making OM SHANTI OM which was stopped by Mike 30 years ago due to Shantipriya’s demands and the sudden disappearance of Shantipriya(this actually Mike tells to hide a truth which I’ll tell later).Mike agrees but after Mike returns from America where he is going for 1 month and if OK finds a heroine and set for OM SHANTI OM then they’ll start the shoot. At the end of the auditions for Shantipriya of OM SHANTI OM OK and Pappu meet Sandhya or Sandy resembling Sandy who is a big fan of OK but due to her bad behaviour he decides her not to cast as Shantipriya not because he doesn’t resembles Shantipriya but due to her bad behaviour but Pappu tells OK to tell Sandy all about their plan.OK takes Mike to the RC studios and starts shooting for OM SHANTI OM after lot of refusals of Mike of shooting OM SHANTI OM in RC studios.Mike is in love with a girl Dolly(Ulvika Chaudhary) whom he goes to meet in the makeup room of Dolly alone but sees Shantipriya’s ghost which is actually Sandy and gets scared as per the plan of OK.One day OK shows some preview or some scenes of OM SHANTI OM to Mike but in few scenes Mike sees Sandy instead of Dolly and gets scared and decides to leave India and go back to America forever but OK makes a plan of arranging a music launch of OM SHANTI OM 2 days later.Mike attends the music launch and OK tells the story about Om Prakash Makhija, his dreams and the murder of Shantipriya done by Mike and his rebirth through a song-Dastaan-E-OM SHANTI OM but Mike sees Sandy and when Mike starts chasing Sandy Sandy’s hand dashes against a candle due to which blood starts flowing on her hand where Mike comes to know that it is actually a tow bit actress who resembles Shantipriya was brought by OK as Shantipriya’s ghost to scare Mike so that Mike can speak the whole truth but before he can catch her a chandelier comes down and hits Mike and Mike becomes unconscious.Mike gets up and sees OK saying the same things which Mike said to Shantipriya just before the murder.OK reveals that he was in his past life a junior artiste Om Prakash Makhija in Mike’s big films of 70s.OK decides to give Shantipriya justice and then Sandy to sent by Pappu and Anwar(Nitish)OK’s personal secretary to scare Mike so that he can speak the truth.Mike tells that he already knew that it was not Shantipriya’s ghost but a two bit actress resembling Shantipriya who was brought by OK to scare Mike so that he can say the truth.OK and Mike sees a girl who tells that the night when the fire stopped burning Mike came back and buried Shantipriya alive under the same chandelier where he made a false promise that they’ll get married in front of everybody under it.Mike tries to shoot the girl but is stopped by OK and a fight starts between them and fire starts burning.Just before Mike makes another attempt of killing the girl OK shoots a bullet at Mike’s right leg.A chandelier falls on Mike and Mike dies.OK thinks that the girl for OK who is Sandy that how does she know all this?Sandy along with Pappu and Anwar enter the front door and later OK realises that it is the actual Shantipriya’s ghost due to which certain things happened before-the photo of Shantipriya during the muhurat of OM SHANTI OM started burning on its own,a chandelier came down and hit Mike and made him unconscious and Shantipriya’s ghost revealing the truth of what happened the night after the fire got extinguished.Shantipriya’s ghost bids a teary farewell and runs up the stairs and disappears and the film ends.
Farah Khan has done a good job.I give it *****=5 stars.

Any Day Karz is a better film. Can watch several times.
Om Shanti Om is too much melodramatic and predictable film. Even the arrival of the Ghost was so predictable. I was lucky to not waste my money by seeing it at a multiplex. Watching it in a DVD at home saves you lot of money.
