Jab We Met Preview

October 17th, 2007 · 9 Comments

I thought GenX used to be influenced by Bollywood, but seems like nowadays things are the other way round. With songs having words “Dard-e-Disco”, movies have titles like “Jab We Met” :-)

An interesting fact about the title is that it was selected based on popular votes. Imagine, the other options were “Punjab Mail” and “Ishq via Bhatinda”!

Jab We Met

Director Imtiaaz Ali, who earlier directed Socha Na Tha, brings to us another ’sweet and simple’ love story. What I had loved about Socha Na Tha was that the characters and their situations seemed so real, something one could relate to. Promos & trailers of Jab We Met promise that same feel again.

Jab We Met

I never really thought of Shahid and Kareena as a good on-screen couple. However this movie has made me change my mind. Shahid looks older and I think the speco-intelligent look suits him. Kareena looks really pretty and she seems to be carrying off the punjabi look well.

Pritam has given some rocking music yet again. The album has a perfect mix of some foot-tapping disco numbers like “Mauja Mauja” along with some music for the soul like “Tum Se Hi” and the Theme song.

A romantic story backed by a good cast and some great music - this film seems to have all the essentials of the ‘feel-good factor’ film that you wouldn’t wanna miss.

No way i’m going to miss this one. I loved Socha Na Tha. Just hope that Imtiaz has not lost the skill of presenting a story in its simplest form. Sujoy Ghosh(director of the immensely likeable Jhankaar Beats) made a disastrous second film….’Home Delivery’. Hope Imtiaz lives up to the potential he promised viewers with Socha Na Tha.

Definitely looking forward to see the off-screen love birds light up the silver screen with their chemistry. Bebo looks much younger with her lean look and shahid at-last older than her. For the first time the two come together in a movie opposite each other in an exclusive romance with no other stars to share the screen like 36 china town or fida. Hope they can say JAB WE MET success after the movie hits theaters!

Its rather risky to say that Pritam has “given” good music. “re-arranged” or “hunted out” seem more like it. I myself am yet to come across a single *good* and *original* song composed by Pritam.

    @Salil
I thought the music he gave for Metro was good.. I am not sure if it was “inspired” from somewhere else.
But one of the instrumental songs in Jab We Met sounds a lot like the Titanic Theme, so I do agree with you :-)

After a long time though I saw a movie that was worthwhile. Now you may not be expecting much out of this small star cast and Indian location based story, but it has a lot to offer. The few things I realised I did not know:

o Kareen Kapoor (surprisingly) has a very strong screen persona and carries the whole movie on her slender shoulders
    o Shahid Kapoor can act
o They both play their roles very well. Kareena is very believable as the ultra-talkative northie and Shahid as the demure stuck-up bade baap ki
o India is extremely colourful. Infact the movie is full of bright bold colours reflecting off their translucent skins. Aah I am so gonna miss it.
o The culture aspect is not over hyped. Families are quite normal and not the Subash Ghai-types
o The songs are very tasteful and there is a song in each category. ‘Nagaara Nagaara’ and ‘Yeh Ishq Haye’ take the cake
o The movie reminds one of DDLJ and the school/college days and the air of positivity attached with it - especially the train catching scenes

The lead pair may not make it in real life, but this movie is a good way to celebrate whatever they had. The ending could have been better…instead of a last minute ‘oh-we-forgot-the-party-remix-song’

All in all, a good watch…I mean, what choices do you have anyways ;)
